#Bearbarians free

I also don't care much about the capstone, IME most games end at level 20 or even earlier. I'm just trying to find some sort of build that lets me be a good melee frontliner but also has good spellcasting options. I don't actually care about being a bear specifically. :) I also like having an initiative bonus. I am just not used to doing that as I usually play sneaky characters or casters. I don't want to dump Str and Con assuming I will always be in animal form, because I won't always be.Д®dit again: Given Barkskin, perhaps dumping Dex would be the way to go. We are being given a 32-point buy and that doesn't allow for 4 good scores. I need good scores in Str, Con, Dex and Wis. I like the idea of being able to rage sometimes, wild shape sometimes, and do both when it is really important.ДЇiguring out ability scores is tough though. Edit again: I found a somewhat confusing ruling from Mearls saying 'a slot is a slot' so it works.)Д®dit: Person Man, just saw your post. But maybe I'm reading the rule wrong? (In the rules thread someone said all spell slots are mixed when you multiclass, but this feature is pretty specific. It says you expend a 'paladin spell slot' and at level 2 that means 2 level 1 slots for a maximum of 4d8 per day. I am not sure the paladin dip really works. I think that's a good trade for this character. I am likely going to play a goliath, as our DM is houseruling in some benefits to go with the powerful build (more weapon damage and reach) along with some drawbacks (disadvantage on stealth, -1 to AC). It's 2 or 3 minutes a day, and while important in key battles, I want to be balanced so I can handle other encounters as well. That said I don't want to put a lot of emphasis on raging in this build. Then beyond that was going to either go to Barb 3 (for the bear resistance and extra rage) or possibly 5 (extra attack and extra movement speed). I had actually come up with Barb 1 / Druid 2 to start (we are starting at level 3) since that makes sense from a number of perspectives. You just see it posted a lot on the forums because people like bear puns. In either case, a strait Druid or strait Barbarian would be better. It also does not stack with Barkskin, which merely sets the floor on your AC at 16. Unfortunately, there aren't any Beast forms with high Dex and Con where that would improve your AC by more then 1 or 2 points.

In addition, Unarmored Defense changes your AC calculation to 10 + Dex + Con (if it is more beneficial). Druid also has access to the Enhance Ability spell, which provides Advantage on all Ability Score rolls for up to an hour (though it does have a Concentration requirement, it is a just a 2nd level spell, and thus spammable at mid-high levels). Druid does not need Resistance, because it gets a ton of extra hit points from Wildshape, and it has access to magical healing,summons, buffs (including forms of Resistance if you're using the Elemental Evil), etc. The main benefits of Rage are Resistance and Advantage on Strength checks. In elemental form thats an extra 300+hp per short rest. While raging you take 1/2 damage from your onion forms on most attacks.

With multi-attack you can burn slots to add free (+5d8 damage) smites on your 2/round melee attacks in animal/ elemental form, in addition to burning slots to heal yourself as bonus actions. I like Barbarian 1 (for the 2 rages/ long rest and con saves), Paladin 2 (for the divine smite), Moon Druid 17 (for 9th level spells). Meanwhile you will be multiattacking in return. You will also be able to heal yourself with spell slots as it's not spell casting.ДЄssuming a Con of 16 (base) you'll be looking at 31+34+34 (or 99) hit points per short rest, taking half damage while raging (around 200 hit points damage to drop you). While raging you have half damage v S,P and B attacks. And will be able to calculate your AC as 10+the bears dex + con (so 13 from memory). Thanks for any thoughts.It goes Barbarian 1/ Moon Druid 2 then either another level of Druid (for barkskin) or push barbarian through to 3rd for Bear totem (and resistance to all damage).ДЄt Barb 1/ Moon Druid 2 you will have 34 bonus HP twice per long rest.

I'm still trying to figure out what race and class to play for an upcoming module and was looking at a goliath barbarian, but I'm afraid I'll get bored of it too quickly. Is it just three levels of barb and then all druid? In what order? I've heard lots of reference to this but not sure exactly how it works.
